Paying at the counter is a bottleneck
Every pickup ends the same way: the customer stands at the counter while someone finds the invoice, runs a card, and prints a receipt. At 5:15pm with three people waiting, that's the slowest part of the day.
It also means the shop carries the balance until the customer physically shows up, which for a car that's been ready since Tuesday can be a while.
How payments work
Connect your own processor
Underhood works with Stripe or Square. You connect your own account - the shop's merchant relationship stays the shop's.
Send a payment link
The invoice goes out with a link the customer can pay from their phone, before or at pickup.
The invoice updates itself
When the payment completes, the invoice is marked paid against a payment record, rather than someone remembering to tick it off.
What changes in the shop
- Cars can be paid for before the customer arrives, so pickup is handing over keys.
- Payment status on an invoice reflects money actually received.
- Your processing rates are whatever you negotiated with Stripe or Square.
Card data is handled by Stripe or Square on their own hosted payment pages. Their terms, rates and settlement timelines apply - Underhood does not process or store card numbers itself.
