Why it exists
Shop management software tends to come from one of two places. Either it's an enterprise platform built for multi-location groups, priced per seat and sold through a demo call — or it's a general-purpose small-business tool that has no idea what a repair order is.
Independent shops end up choosing between paying for complexity they'll never use and bending a generic invoicing app into something it isn't. Plenty stay on paper tickets and a whiteboard, which works better than software people like to admit — right up until the advisor is off sick and nobody can answer the phone properly.
Underhood is the third option: a system that knows what an estimate, an inspection and a repair order are, at a price a three-bay shop can sign off without a meeting.
Who's behind it
Underhood is built by a founder with 25 years in the automotive industry rather than by a software company working from research about what shops might want. That background is the main reason the shop floor view exists at all, and the reason inspections and estimates are one workflow instead of two products stitched together.
It also shapes what Underhood deliberately leaves out. There's no franchise reporting and no call-center module, because the shops this is for don't have either.
How it's priced, and why
One plan, $99 a month per shop, every feature included, first month free. Not per user — because charging per seat in a small shop means the techs don't get logins, and then inspections get done on paper and typed up later by whoever has a seat. That single pricing decision determines whether the software actually gets used in the bay.
The price is on the website for the same reason. If you have to book a call to find out what something costs, the answer usually depends on what the seller thinks you can pay.
