SMS Opt-In Policy
Last updated: August 24, 2026
This page describes how a shop using Underhood or Underhood Go obtains a customer's consent before enrolling them in text messaging. It exists as documentation of that process — for shops, for their customers, and for carrier or platform review of the messaging program described in our Text Messaging Terms.
1. Opt-In Method: Verbal
A shop takes a customer's phone number in person or by phone — typically when a vehicle is dropped off, or when an appointment is booked. At that point, no message is sent yet. A customer is only enrolled in text messaging after staff separately ask for, and receive, explicit consent for that specific purpose.
2. The Consent Script
Staff use language along these lines when asking:
"We can text you updates on your vehicle — a reminder before your appointment and a link when your invoice is ready. That's usually one or two texts per visit. Message and data rates may apply, you can reply STOP anytime to stop, or HELP for help. Our terms are at getunderhood.com/sms-terms. Is it okay if we text you?"
This covers, every time it's used:
- What will be sent and roughly how often
- That message and data rates may apply
- How to get help (reply HELP) or opt out (reply STOP)
- Where the full terms live
- A clear yes/no question — enrollment never happens on an assumed or implied "yes"
3. What Happens After "Yes"
Staff record the customer's consent in the shop's account, timestamped and attributed to the staff member who obtained it. The customer then receives one confirmation text — a plain "You're signed up for text updates from [Shop]. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help." — before ever receiving an appointment reminder or invoice notice. No other message is sent until that confirmation has gone out.
4. What Happens on "No"
If a customer declines, nothing changes — the shop keeps their phone number on file for calling and for other business records as normal, but no text messages are ever sent to that number, and it is never enrolled without the customer separately being asked and agreeing again later.
5. Opting Out Later
A customer who has opted in can stop at any time by replying STOP to any message they receive, or by telling shop staff directly. Either way, the shop's system marks the number opted out immediately, and no further messages are sent to it from that shop unless the customer separately opts back in.
6. Scope
This policy applies per shop and per customer — each independent business using Underhood or Underhood Go follows this same process with its own customers. Consent given to one shop does not enroll a customer with any other shop.
